School Activities

Information and Communication Technology
The school is well resourced with computers.  There are 3 specialised computer rooms,  one of them equipped with Filming and Music recording studio, plus 3 additonal classrooms equipped with 10 machines each. Each classroom has its own computer; all compters are networked and have internet access; 30 rooms are equipped with digital data projectors and 8 rooms have inter-active whiteboards.

We have a wide range of educational programs and reference programs so that pupils may access information at the touch of a button. The school has controlled Internet access and pupils have this as a research medium.

Slovak

Slovak languauge is available only to Slovak nationals as their home language.

Library

We have a well-stocked library with over  7,500 books and all pupils are encouraged to take books home to read for their pleasure as well as for the development of their English language skills.

Trips, Educational Outings and Residentials

Throughout the course of a school year, children will have the opportunity to take part in several educational field trips to support and enhance aspects of the curriculum. Children in Key Stage 2 will be given the opportunity to take part in residential outings which involve them staying away from home for up to four nights. These residential programmes are meticulously organised to ensure that the students have excellent and fun learning experiences, while being safe and secure at all times. We also arrange exchanges with pupils from schools in other countries, and other educational visits abroad.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

For children needing additional English language skills, we provide specialised lessons delivered by our dedicated EAL (English as an Additional Language) teachers on an individual basis or in small groups. These lessons are inserted into the day so that the children can still spend most of their day with their class group developing their language skills through interaction with fellow classmates. In addition to the specialists, our extremely favourable teacher to pupil ratio allows us to provide excellent support for those new to English, whatever their age or proficiency in the language.

Homework

Primary
Homework is an integral part of the school curriculum. Teachers will set homework as appropriate. There is no hard and fast rule, but generally, the older the student, the more homework will be set.
From Reception to Year 2, homework will mostly be an extension of the reading being done in school. Parents are asked to help by hearing their child read on a daily basis. In Year 3, there may be tables or spellings to learn, and occasional written pieces of work. From Year 4, written work becomes more frequent and more extensive. In Year 5 and Year 6 there is an expectation that children will be set homework every night.

Secondary
Secondary students receive homework every night. The homework schedule for senior classes is posted in the section curriculum. All students are issued with a Planner into which they should note the day’s homework and the date by which it is due. Parents are asked to check the diary regularly and to sign it on a weekly basis. If a homework assignment is missed, parents will receive a ‘Homework Letter’ informing them of the details.

Eco School

Our school is taking part in this international project which supports sustainable living and provides opportunities for its students to learn how to reduce the environmental impact we place on the whole school and within the community. We have been awarded international status for being an Eco-school and this has been done through a range of initiatives taking place within the school environment.

At BISB we have 2 Eco-committee groups: primary and secondary. These committees are formed with pupil representatives from every Form group. They meet regularly to discuss new ideas and suggestions about how we can help improve these key environmental topics:

• Water
• Waste
• Transport
• School grounds
• Healthy living
• Global perspectives
• Energy
• Litter
• Biodiversity

We have carried out a range of awareness campaigns within the school including class assembly presentations, healthy living week, swim-a-thons and Eco-club. By making these issues an important part of our curriculum and daily life we are setting a high standard for others to follow.

Eco-Committee members:
Filip Car, Year 9
Tanya  Rai, Year 10
Eirini Sourlantzi, Year 10
Diana Cizova, Year 10
