in the playground.

the school foyer at the side entrance. Children can wait in this area and then go up to their classroom from
08:15.
• Morning Snack and Playtime (40 min)
All students have a morning break where they eat snack (they should bring a healthy snack and drink) and
then have the opportunity to play outside. The students are supervised at all times by several teachers and
TA’ s. There are separate playgrounds for Years 3 & 4, and Years 5 &6.
• Lunch and Playtime
All students have 50 minutes for lunch and playtime. A hot school lunch is provided or students can bring
their own packed lunch. The lunch times are staggered to avoid canteen congestion.
• End of Day Collection
The formal school day finishes at 15:20. All students will be brought to the canteen area by their class
teacher and must be signed out by a designated person and then taken promptly off the school premises. If
you require your child to go home with another child, the school must be officially informed in advance,
either by writing in the school or calling the school office.
If you wish your child to leave the school supervised by an older sibling or unsupervised, you must inform
the school in writing.
The Secondary School Day
Timetables exist for all classes and you should have a personal copy for your child’s class. The school day
is strictly from 08:30 until 15:20. Periods are 40 minutes long, some of which may be double lessons.
There are two 20-minute breaks at 09:50 and 11:30. Secondary lunch starts at 13:10 and lasts until 14:00.
Lateness is disruptive to your child’s day and to the class routine. Occasionally lateness is unavoidable.
However, persistent lateness is not acceptable. We ask all parents to get children to school between 08:00
at the earliest and 08:15 at the latest, allowing them time to get ready for a prompt start of class at 08:30.
After 08:15, children should go directly to their classrooms.
If a child misses morning registration, he/she must report personally to the school office to register their
presence at school. This is for security reasons, namely so that in an emergency we can account for
everybody present on site. Similarly, if a child has to leave school early, he/she must sign out at the school
office for the same reason. No child will be allowed to leave early unless we receive notification from a
parent.
School finishes at 15:20. It is important that each class is able to end the day in an orderly way; this is not
possible if children are being removed early. If, under exceptional circumstances, you need to remove a
child early on a particular day, please send in a note so that the class teacher can be prepared for the early
departure (for instance by making sure that the child has completed tasks and been given homework, if
appropriate).
School Year
The academic year at the British International School Bratislava usually consists of 180 teaching days, divided in roughly equal proportions between three school terms. The first term, known as the Autumn Term, runs from the beginning of September until the middle of December. After a break for Christmas and New Year festivities, school recommences in early January for the Spring Term. Just before Easter the Spring Term ends and, following a holiday break, the third and final term of the school year begins. This Summer Term runs until the beginning of July when the academic year formally comes to a close. During the course of each term, there is a half-term break of some two days to a week. The school is also closed for Slovak public holidays.
